back from the printers

.
I got my first run of artwork prints back today.
Yeah!
I'm super happy with the turn out. I've gone for 2 different sizes with the prints: A4 and A3. (Because they're square the actual print area is slightly smaller than the paper, but you get the drift)
I love them so!!
.
Pretty soon, all of my Peacocks and Pinstripes original artworks and limited edition prints will be up for sale on my website ~ after my exhibition opening next week. Then you'll be able to order them online to your hearts content! I'm also looking into greeting cards and t-shirts so I'll keep you posted with those.
.
Or if you're in BrisVegas, come check the artworks out in the flesh for the month of March @ Mei Li, 115 Brighton Road Sandgate, QLD!
.
By the way, if you're an artist and you're after high quality giclee prints and/or professional photographs of your artworks, Printrooms in Toowong, QLD is the place to go! Yeehaa!!
Their attention to detail was awesome and they were such a pleasure to deal with.
Thank you Sue and Bill!
.
Yippeee!!!!

at the printers

Ok, pass the paper bag.
.

.
I know it's kinda (actually, really) silly, but I had this *pang* of worry when I dropped my artworks off on Friday to get professionally photographed and printed for my exhibition:
.
... What if the artworks get damaged?
... Or burnt in a freak fire?
... Or *insert ridiculously dramatic art-armageddon stress-out here*
.
I think I've got too much time on my hands ~ I'd gotten used to spending massive hours art~making for the exhibition, so I guess what goes up must come down!
.

.
So anyway, this is the first time I'm doing limited edition prints of my artworks instead of only selling the originals. I think it's nice to give poeple affordable options and I feel really good about it actually. Can't wait to see how they turn out!
.
I've gone for Giclee prints on Hahnemuhle paper, which basically means they're archival prints which come printed in super duper vibrant inks.
Basically Giclee + Hahnemuhle = The Bees Knees.
.
That's a special giclee printer above, by the way. Mine won't be prints of ladies wearing turtlenecks while smiling at numbers, but you get the gist of it's size & specialness. It's got 12 ink cartridges! 12!

Me can't wait!

THE coolest invention

You know how when you get kids a present, all they want to do is just play with the boxes?? Well check out this invention ... it's the coolest thing ever ~ I'm almost wetting my pants with it's Awe-someness!

It's an Aussie product called Makedo. The idea is that you use the Makedo connector bits and pieces to make new, functional objects/toys/artworks out of junk. You can seriously make anything ... puppies, chickens, people, robots, cars, angels, artworks even life-size boats!

I won't babble on too much ~ check out the website and see for yourself. There's a short mini-vid that shows what can be made and how, as well as a really cool blog (loads of recycling ideas) and heaps of other cool stuff.

Yaaaaay for Aussie innovation! I feel so proud!

exhibition artworks complete!

(sneak peak)
.
Finally, all my artworks are complete for my upcoming solo!! I just finished the last one this morning ... YAY!! It feels GREAT! I'm SO close to the finish line I can smell it.
.
.
... And thank God too ~ now I can start getting everything else in order ... there's less than 2 weeks til I hang them! Eek!
.
I've decided to do a run of artwork prints for opening night as well, so I'll be getting hubby to photograph all the artworks this afternoon so I can take the images to the printers. Then there's all the other finishing touches still to do, like putting hangers on the back of the artworks, sealing them with clear varnish, writing up little blurbs about each painting, yada yada yada.

Phew! Did I mention I'm relieved?!?!

public mural highlights

I've recently put in a proposal for a maaaaasive art project in Southern Brisbane, requiring 400m2 of artwork. 400 m2!!
It's been about 6 months since I've led a mural project and it's got me reminiscing about ol' times. Here's a few of my favourite mural projects over the last five years or so:
.

Walter Street community mural, Caboolture QLD
.

Cultural Canvas Indoor mural, Chiang Mai, Thailand
.

Oxford Park railway station, QLD
.

Community mural, Auchenflower rail station, QLD
.

Shelter shed mural, Auchenflower rail station, QLD
.

Community mosaic & clay mural, Michelton, QLD
.
There's always some risk as an artist making public art, I think. I look back now and see all these 'holes' in some of my early projects and I cringe! Thank goodness as my confidence and experience grows, I bring a few more tricks of the trade to each artwork. So it goes without saying that I've only posted the projects above that have passed my own scrutinised standards.
All going well I'll have another good one to add to the list if my current proposal is selected! Fingers crossed, like this XXX

new commission: *Emerge Free*

Emerge Free. 90 x 45 cms. Mixed media on board. Artwork commission (just completed).
.
After finishing this artwork, inspired by an image of my client's children, I emailed it through yesterday for approval. She got back to me thing morning with the relieving news that she loves it! PHEW!! Yay! Above is the finished artwork called 'Emerge Free' and below is a close up of a portion.
.

.
Below is a pic of the initial loose design option selected by client (I've blogged about the process images and design brief here)
.

.
It's always a relieving feeling when a client loves a commissioned work ~ it can be quite a vulnerable place to be in when it comes to the approval stage! So I've learnt to see it as a service for an individual, rather than a reflection of my work as an artist. That way if changes are required, it's only a mild blow to my ego!
.
In general, I've found that if I create something that I love and feel happy with, the client does too. I don't take on projects I'm not inspired by (I learnt that the long way!), and I won't sell it unless I'm proud of it. I just do my best to listen to what a client wants, gather as much info and images from them as I can (What are your fave paintings of mine style-wise?, Where it will be displayed?, What colours are you drawn to?), and do my thing from there. This time it payed off!! Yay! It's a wonderful feeling.
