one giant step

Oh my God,

Oh my God,

Oh my God!!!

Guess what I just did? Go on, guess! QUICK! C’moooooon you’re taking too looong! Ok, I’ll just tell you:

I’VE JUST SENT AWAY MY VERY FIRST ORIGINAL PATTERN DESIGNS TO THE PRINTERS … READY TO BE MADE INTO FABRIC!! (and yes, I AM shouting!)

I can not tell you how much of a dream-come-true this is for me. Having my own art as fabric had been something I’ve mused about for years and years and years. In fact, I’d go as far as saying it feels that it’s what I’ve been BORN TO DO.

And better yet ~ My printers use water-based pigment inks on organic, natural fibre textiles. Being the tree-hugger I am, I couldn’t ask for a better match for my designs.

Oh MY! I’m excited!

Now the task is to WAIT for two weeks til they’re in my hot little hands. And when they are, oh when they are, I WILL BE SHOUTING IT FROM THE TREETOPS!

I hope you have a fantastic weekend ahead.

I love our little market. It’s seriously the most charming little market in the known universe. Seriously. I've recently taken a hand in organising this market too, so I may be extra biased about it from hereon in.  But it actually is awesome! Did I mention that?

Anyhoo, I’m pretty chuffed to have loads of new fabric jewellery made up for my display, which are now available in mix' ‘n match sets like these …

And loads of art prints on my new funky display. You’ll have to come down to check it all out in person!

Hope to see you there … and if you do come, make sure you come introduce yourself to me ~ I love a good chat!

vintage fabric finds

  vintage scraps

Last night I purchased this delicious piece of folk vintage fabric and this nice fat bag of vintage scraps (they’ll be perfect for making my fabric jewellery with and adding to artworks). Such great etsy finds, both from My Poppet in Melbourne.

 folk vintage fabric

Then today, I found ALL these in a hidden little op shop in my parents’ street, of all places! How cool is that?! Folding them up just doesn’t do them all justice. I filled a shopping bag and there was still loads left there! My collection of vintage aprons is really comping along these days … I must devote a post especially to them.

Lastly, it’s not vintage, but it’s fabric, and it’s freaken awesome. The lovely Belinda from Sybella and I did a swapsies for one of my fabric wedge necklaces and in return she custom-made me this beautiful clutch using colourful 80’s tapes fabric! I got it from the postman today. Pleased as punch!

Check it out, her work is so beautiful and professional … my clutch even arrived in it’s own bag. A bag in a bag?!?! I like it!

Oh, and here’s a little artwork I finished photographing today, using pieces of vintage hand-crocheted lace and acrylic paint.

It’s called Carnivale of Life … and I reckon it looks pretty cool converted into a pattern design.

Hope you’re having a great week! C x

RAH!! interview with wicked child designs ~ just in time for Halloween!

Boo! RAH!! Woooooooo!

jeffrey

Halloween is drawing near and I thought, who better to celebrate it with than Teneale Muir, the super awesome gal from Wicked Child Designs!

Just think meticulously hand-crafted softies in the form of hairy monsters, famous (sometimes dead) superstars and poised politicians wearing budgie smugglers, all with their very own quotes attached … and you’re well on your way to wicked child world!! So, prepare to be spooked and delighted my Teneale’s interview below …

Who is the person behind ‘Wicked Child Designs’?

I guess that would be me, Teneale Muir!  I'm the one behind the sewing machine, and my husband helps out with some of the quotes and ideas.

How would you sum up your work/style in a couple of sentences?

My style is a little on the geeky side. I like dolls that I can relate to because they're a little different, and ones that are cool and hip. Rather than the sort that involve brushing loads of knotty hair and looking pretty.

How did your practice begin?

Well, my husband Tim bought me a sewing machine a few years ago. I had no clue what I was going to make, so I went on a hunt for inspiration and found the book Softies. I made lots of weird and cute things like owls and dogs, and then started making little people. I added some little stories to make them a little bit more fun.  I also read Real Living magazines, and about four years ago they mentioned this crazy land called Etsy. Intrigued, I went there and couldn't quite find my way back.

Have you faced any challenges in your work to date?

Getting to bed before midnight. That's my biggest challenge.

Who have you learnt from?

I think I've learnt most from my family the concept and struggles of running your own business. My husband Tim started a technology business here years ago which he shares with two others in Ireland, my mum ran her own floristry business, and my auntie used to run two hairdressing studios.

I'm also inspired by Pip Lincolne from Meet Me At Mike's, and the awesome small business' in BrisStyle that I've watched progress further into bigger and better things, like Michelle from Pedrosprout opening her shop Nook and Miriam from Bubba Chenille opening her shop Mimmis.

What do you love most about being an artist?

Being able to create something that is unique that others would like to own or give to someone they like, rather than buying something boring from David Jones.

Do you have a ‘day job’ or is art your full time occupation?

I have a full time job as Office Manager. Wicked Child Designs is my 'every other hour in the day' job!  It also keeps me sane, I think.

Can you finish these sentences:

In another life I would love to ……. do what I'm doing now, but at a much earlier age so I have longer to enjoy it.

If I had all the power in the world I would ……. conserve it.

The first thing I do every morning is ……. go to bed.

My motto is ……. sewing, sewing, sewing, what do we do we sew sew sew.... (think Dory from ‘Finding Nemo’).

Do you have any links, upcoming events or advice you’d like to share?

I'll be running another Softie Workshop at the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market.  I did my first at Capalaba library earlier this year, and it went really well.  People can book the November workshop by emailing me at wickedchilddesigns@yahoo.com.au, and see more info on my blog www.wickedchilddesigns.blogspot.com .

We will also have loads of monsters made from vintage and recycled fabrics, and Golden Book coaster sets for sale.

And check out my etsy store here  and facebook page here

Thanks so much Teneale!!

turquoise treasury

So I’d been gawking for months over all these lovely etsy treasuries popping up around town … but I hadn’t ever tried putting a treasury together myself! Finally this morning, I put my very own one together, called Turquoise Dreaming.

So, these are a few of my favourite things … in turquoise!

birthday giveaway

birthday-balloons
Ok, truth be told I am one of ‘those’ people who still at the ripe age of (almost) 31, I still get as excited about my birthday as I did when I was a kid!
There’s nothing quite like it … and the anticipation of toys I mean prezzies, the special birthday dinner, the waking up to a day of well wishes and time with my favourite people … Oh I have butterflies already! Yippee!
So the celebrate my birthday this Saturday, I’m having TWO giveaways via my facebook pages.
First I’m giving away a mounted Itty Bitty Art Print.
To enter the draw, pop over to my Chrissy Foreman C facebook page and tell me what the BEST prezzie you’ve ever received is!

you had me in ‘stitches’

Boy, has my trusty old Pfaff sewing machine gotten a true work-out over these last few days! With over 80 new fabric rings and a bunch of matching earrings made, I think we’re both feeling a bit woozy!

As you can see below, I’ve tweaked my earring design so now they compliment my fabric rings, with added colourful stitching right around the outside of the fabric.

I feel really good about this, because not only does it saves me time needing to paint fray stoppa around the open edges of my old earrings design, but the new ones match the rest of my fabric jewellery range perfectly now. Yay!

I love the feeling when a new, better design comes together and evolves over time. Just looking back at my old jewellery, I see how far I’ve come ~ and it feels great :)

Yippee!!!

I’ve been busily (and happily) making a bunch of new fabric wedge necklaces for upcoming markets and orders. Please excuse the overkill of images that I’m about to share with you!

I’ve customised the design so they’re all reversible (hence why I’ve put them in little pairs). All of these puppies are $35 each :)
